Summer Solstice 235

The "235" refers to the Tropic of Cancer, which lies at 23.5 degrees north latitude and runs across Taiwan. On average, this line shifts about 14 meters southward each year, symbolizing the boundary between tropical and subtropical zones. This is most evident in Taiwan's agricultural landscape: tropical fruits like pineapples and sugar apples thrive south of the line, while temperate crops such as tea and rice are more common to the north.

Every year at noon on the summer solstice, the sun shines directly overhead along the Tropic of Cancer. In Ruisui Township, Hualien, this astronomical phenomenon can be observed—known as the "no-shadow moment," where people standing under the sun cast no shadow at all.

We welcome everyone to experience this rare and fascinating event each year on the summer solstice and witness the magic of nature firsthand!
